Hydrogen has the potential to be an invaluable tool for decarbonizing power generation, while also ensuring energy security.

Gas turbine combined cycle power plants already deliver highly efficient power when using natural gas. While it is an essential fuel during the energy transition., natural gas still releases CO2 — even if significantly less than other fossil fuels.

This is where hydrogen is a potential solution. Modern gas turbines, like the JAC (J-series Air-Cooled) series, are designed to be supplied by a mix of natural gas and alternative fuels, like hydrogen today and to be 100% powered by hydrogen in the future.

In November 2023, Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), conducted a landmark test with many unique factors at Takasago Hydrogen Park. The demonstration used a mix of 30% hydrogen on a large-frame JAC gas turbine, connected to the local grid, with the hydrogen produced on-site.
