The world is rapidly burning through its carbon budget. This is the amount of CO₂ that can be emitted to give us a 50% chance of keeping global temperature rises under 1.5°C. It’s a trend that makes the rollout of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology increasingly critical.

The number of CCUS projects globally is expected to rise more than sevenfold by 2030, and the International Energy Agency says CCUS will play an “important and diverse role in meeting global energy and climate goals”.

CCUS is applicable across a wide range of industries, including the hard-to-abate steel and cement sectors. While it will not be enough on its own to solve climate change, it will be an indispensable part of the equation. This graphic shows the countries and sectors where CCUS capacity is expected to rise fastest by 2030, and what will be done with the captured carbon.
